This leather sword knot is complete and in good condition. The leather is not cracked, and remains supple. Crazing is noted in the outer finished layer of leather. Both keepers are present and stitching remains tight. The fringe knot is complete and likewise tightly stitched. The reverse of the lanyard features a stamp reading “GAYLORD / CHICOPEE / MASS”. Length is 19” when folded and secured by the keepers, with a width of just under 1” at the lanyard. All leather retains a rich, black finish.
As part of the cavalry trooper’s equipment during battle, the knot was secured to the sword hilt and then looped around the cavalryman’s wrist. Its purpose was to enable the combatant to retain possession of his edged weapon should he receive a blow that knocked the blade from his grip. These original leather sword knots are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain today.
A nice, complete example for the Civil War cavalry collector. [cm][ph:L]
