Featuring the original gilding on the stamped brass, this is as close to new condition as an item of this age can possibly be.

The reverse of the plate features lead filling that has yet to fully oxidize and remains a metallic gray as if poured recently.  Both attaching loops on the reverse are firmly affixed and free of rust and tarnish.  The stamped US face is virtually free of imperfections, save for small superficial scratches on the surface – which are difficult to note without excessive lighting.  As shown in the photos, the brass shines in a beautiful, mellow gold color with no damage to the edges of the plate.

The item measures 2.75” x 1.5” and features no maker’s markings or stampings on the back.

The p1839 cartridge box plate would generally be affixed to the outer flap of a .69 caliber cartridge box, anchored by a thin strip of leather or twine run through both loops on the reverse side once each loop had perforated the leather.

This box plate is in a truly scarce, wonderful condition – making it a prime piece for display or collecting.  Ones this nice seldom come along, and a pattern 1839 oval plate is an essential piece of Civil War kit that was used in great numbers both before and throughout the conflict.    [cm][ph:L]
