This plate, circa the 1880’s or later, is complete and feature-rich.  Mounted to the face is a letter “E” made of German Silver, designating the membership of the wearer.  The corners are clipped and the reverse retains keeper and tongue.  The letter is mounted via leather thongs through wire loops - extending through two slots cut into the plate. Brass tone is muted throughout but free of damage and tarnish. Dimensions are 2.2” x 2.5”.

A nice remnant of the state militia or guard systems of the post-Civil War era.  [cm][ph:L]
