This piece closely matches examples of Confederate canteens from each theater of the Civil War.

Simple in material and construction, the body of this tin canteen is comprised of two slightly concaved halves soldered to a circular band.  All seams appear to be intact and strongly connected.  Attached are three tin canteen sling loops (sling not present) and a .75” spout with no stopper.  Some light oxidation is present around the outer edges as shown, where interior and exterior moisture is most apt to collect.

On each side, scratches are present, along with light surface rust in localized areas.  One side of the canteen features a dent in the lower half and a very small circular hole near the center of the dent.  Much of the tin features a gray to bright surface finish, while the interior of the spout and body show expected light surface rust from use.

The canteen measures 6” x 6” x 2.5” at its widest point.

Perhaps the single most important item of a soldier’s kit, this basic Confederate canteen would be an excellent addition to any Civil War collection.  [cm][ph:cm/L]
