Offered here is an atypical Confederate tin canteen. Not a “drum” canteen and not a “M1858” style either; more of a hybrid of the two. Called a “oblate spheroid” by Sylvia and O’Donnell in their Civil War canteen book, this is constructed of two tin halves, with tin spout, and three tin strap brackets. Besides the slightly odd shape, another distinguishing characteristic is a narrow, recessed channel found on both sides.
The brown wool cover shows two small spots that were “rubbed” away, but otherwise is in fantastic condition. Original strap is full length with a small roller buckle attached. The strap shows some ripping and separation where it passes through the top brackets, but again, is otherwise in nice condition. The stopper is attached to one of the brackets by a sturdy cord. The stopper is much longer than its typical Northern counterpart.
See “Civil War Canteens” page 134 for reference. This fine canteen is from the Texas Civil War Museum collection. [jet][ph:L]
