The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. This is the smooth-sided style, and has a dent in the middle of the backside. It is covered in brown wool. The cover is complete and in very fine condition. The “front” features three lines of white stenciling that, unfortunately, is mostly unreadable except for “1862” in the middle. All three sling loops, the spout, and stopper are all present. The spout is maker marked (A. JEWEL). This is a New York Depot canteen and still has an iron chain connecting the stopper ring to one of the side strap brackets.
A complete and original cotton shoulder strap remains on the canteen. It is in fine condition and still shows a U.S. inspector stamp!
This is a very fine example of a Civil War smooth-side canteen. [jet][ph:L]
