A model 1858 smooth side canteen that is most often associated with contracts to the St. Louis Arsenal during the last two years of the war. The contract to local firms specified tin spouts. This example is tin with a folded lip. The St. Louis variety is noted with a puffed-up collar and an extra amount of lead solder holding it in place. It is 8’ in diameter and has three folded edge sling loops. Both sides have considerable large dents and two small approximate ½” holes, with a seam rust through spot at the bottom. The surface is about a 50/50 mixture of grey tin and light brown rust. [stp][ph:L]
