Just over two inches from end to end, this small pattern 1858 infantry horn insignia made of gold bullion is backed on wool felt. There is a small tear near the horn on the upper lefthand side. These smaller insignia are one variation on the regulation pattern 1858 infantry insignia, which was one inch larger than this smaller version. They were made in various sizes to fit different kinds of caps from chasseur’s kepis to forage caps. Although these smaller patterns were not considered regulation, they were widely used and accepted.
The reverse shows the cotton threads of the embroidery which remain intact although discolored. There are three spots of modern adhesive where it appears a modern collector either attempted to strengthen the item or it was done in an attempt to mount the item to be displayed in some way.
