The 38th NJ regiment was organized at Trenton, New Jersey under the command of Colonel William J. Sewell, Lieutenant Colonel Ashbel W. Angel, and Major William H. Tantum. It was one of several “Hundred Days Men” regiments recruited at this time intended for guarding rear areas and handling supplies to free up veterans for front line duty.
