This silver pin is a 19th Army Corps badge in the shape of a "fan-leaved cross with an octagonal center". Strange in that it has Company and Regimental information engraved, but no soldier’s name.

Nice silver badge, 1.14” square, with “Co. E / 165 / NYV” engraved on the face. T-bar pin attached on back (horizontally) with catch. Nice silver tarnish on both sides.

The 19th Corps insignia was officially adopted on November 17, 1864. The badge design is similar to the Maltese cross, but with a distinctive octagonal center. The 19th Corps primarily served in the Department of the Gulf.

From the Texas Civil War Museum collection.    [jet][ph:L]
