He was 19 years old when he enlisted in the 158th New York Infantry regiment on August 8, 1862, at Brooklyn, to serve three years. He was mustered in as sergeant, Co. E, August 31, 1862, and was soon promoted to first sergeant, January 18, 1865. Serving the entire war, he was mustered out with the company, June 30, 1865, at Richmond, VA. Commissioned (but not mustered) as a second lieutenant, May 17, 1865, with this rank from March 3, 1865. This beautiful badge suspended from a crimson ribbon is sterling silver. It is rather large with a suspended length of 5 inches. It has 3 separate silver components. The top bar with pin, the lower ribbon bar and the suspended Bottony type cross of the 18th corps. The top pin bar is inscribed " Presented to ". The ribbon bar reads: “Chas. G. Kauffmann" over "2nd Lieut. Co. E. 158th N.Y.". The cross that measures 2 inches by 2 inches is scroll engraved on the entire face with an enameled beautiful crimson heart in the center. The condition is excellent with hints of black silver tarnish overall. [pe] [ph:L]
