Stamped brass crossed sabers Cavalry insignia in good condition. Insignia was meant for wear on the crown of the forage cap, kepi or slouch hat.
The face has a mellow tone. Reverse has all four attachment loops anchored by lead solder.
In 1851 the U.S. Army authorized crossed sabers as the insignia for Dragoon officers; in 1858 both Dragoon and Cavalry officers wore crossed sabers, but the orientation differed -- Dragoons had the edge up, and Cavalry had the edge down. In 1861 all mounted forces were unified as “Cavalry” and the insignia was standardized to be worn with the edge up. [jet] [ph:L]
