A very good set of Civil War shoulder straps for a Lieutenant Colonel of staff, using two rows of gold bullion embroidery for the border, with jaceron wire borders inside and out, and silver bullion embroidered oakleaf rank insignia. The fields are black velvet with very good color, showing a couple of light rubs. The oakleaves are medium bright. The borders show some dull silver along their central ridges from rubbing, with gilt showing in the lower areas and recesses. All the bullion coils are all in place, showing no bare spots, and clearly show the opposing angles of the coils in the two rows. The jaceron wire is in place, with no springing to the coils and no gaps showing between it and borders. The underlay was turned under, not trimmed, and sewn down, showing a section of the web base of the embroidery, as is common in Civil War shoulder straps. The rank indicates an upper echelon staff officer, perhaps at division, corps or even army level and is a difficult rank to find on a staff strap. [sr][ph:L]
