This is a stamped brass crossed-cannon insignia made to simulate the gold bullion embroidery of a Civil War artillery officer's regulation cap or kepi device. Each cannon barrel is die-struck with a raised diamond-lozenge motif intended to mimic the wrapped bullion thread of the hand-embroidered originals, a construction method that allowed dealers and sutlers to offer a far more durable, field-ready alternative to true embroidered devices. The insignia measures approximately 2-1/2 inches across and retains a pleasing gilt finish with only light wear consistent with age.

All attachment wires are secured with original period solder, with one wire showing a later, more modern solder repair to the mounting point.   [ss] [ph:L]
