This is an Indian War Era U.S. Cavalry Pattern 1878 shoulder strap for canteens and haversacks. This consists of an adjustable bridle leather strap 1” wide and approximately 57” long overall. With brass adjuster hooks riveted to the ends, this strap is currently folded and set at about 45” in length. Additionally, two larger floating brass hooks are on the strap and used to carry either the Model 1878 canteen or the Model 1878 haversack. The leather is soft and supple with moderate crazing to the black surface finish. The floating “belt loops” are missing. It is unmarked except for initials on the ends.
These straps are getting increasingly difficult to find. [jet] [ph:L]
