Made of black bridle leather this Civil War period sling meas. approx. 50.75 inches long x 2.50 inches wide. The length measurement is with the sling unbuckled and lying flat and measuring from the tip of the “bat wing” to the brass buckle.

Leather is in very good condition with light surface crazing throughout. Approx. 1.00 inch above the bat wing is a partially readable maker’s mark of …. MAKER SPRINGFIELD MASS” in three lines and just above that is a faint U.S. sub-inspector’s mark.

Sling has three sets of adjustment holes. Brass buckle is unmarked and has two working tongues. Both brass pieces have a matching patina.

Iron snap hook with makers mark, “E. GAYLORD, / CHICOPEE / MASS. / T. J. SHEPARD.” Snap gate works properly. Metal surface is clean.
