Sword knots were standard issue wrist straps with enlisted sabers to prevent its loss if the soldier had to let go of the grip for some reason. This is the regulation Civil War pattern made of black bridle leather. One end of the strap is sewn to the inside of the knot and tassels. The other is slightly pointed, can be withdrawn from the knot, placed around the knucklebow of the saber’s guard, and then slid back into the knot, slightly protruding, to allow one of the inner row of tassels to be put through a small hole in its pointed end. The strap is then pulled back slightly to lock it in place.

The “turk’s head” braided knot and tassels are in place. One of the two sliding leather tightener loops usually on these is missing. The other is present. The surface of the leather and the color are very good, with some shallow wrinkling, a little crazing to the finish and light rubs to the edges, but no substantial flaking or losses. Clearly visible is the oval acceptance stamp of a US Ordnance Department sub-inspector, with “ORD DEPT / SUB INSPECTOR” fully legible at the lower middle and bottom edge of the oval, but with the name a bit too light to make out, though some close inspection with a raking light might reveal it.

The strap has not been treated with any oils, preservatives, polish or dressing. The leather is flexible, but of course should not be bent at too sharp an angle. This is key piece in a cavalry display.  [sr][ph:m]
