This buff leather, Model-1851 sword belt comes complete with sword hangers (one detached but present), all brass hardware, and a very fine Virginia State Seal belt plate. No shoulder strap present.

The belt is of buff leather and shows honest use. Stitching is strong and intact throughout, although the small piece that supports the short (front) sword drop is an old replacement and has a break. The most unfortunate feature of the leather is that someone over-treated it with leather preservative. Belt measures approximately 36" long and 1.5" wide. All brass wears a pleasing patina.

The belt plate features a beautifully detailed Virginia Seal. The stamped bench mark numbers do not match, however the plate and keeper have a perfect fit.

The Virginia belt plate was made by E. Gaylord prior to hostilities. It features the state seal of Virginia, "Virtus”, or Virtue, standing over a defeated "tyranny” and bore the Latin motto "Sic Semper Tyrannis” or "Thus ever to Tyrants”. Gaylord produced a very high-quality plate by first casting and then die stamping to bring out the detail in the Virginia state seal. After casting and die stamping the face, the tongue was brazed on and a keeper was fitted. The highest known number is in the 900 range and it is believed that no more than 1000 were ever produced. Numerous images of 1st and 2nd Virginia Cavalry wearing these belts exist.

This belt was acquired from the Texas Civil War Museum collection. [jet][ph:L]
