If you want "The Look" in a Confederate belt plate that was born on its original leather here you have it. The CS belt plate itself is the oval "egg shaped" stamped brass type. It has on the back soldered iron wire hooks. The wire used was telegraph wire! "This is a Western theater plate issued in large numbers to the Army of Tennessee during 1862 and 1863." (Mullinax, Confederate Belt Buckles & Plates). It has a great deep plum brown patina and is bent and marred from field service but looks wonderful! It is attached to its original dark brown leather belt which has 42 inches in length and is 2 inches wide with an incised line running at the top and bottom. 5 holes are punched for adjustment.

This rig is set up to carry the Model 1832 heavy artillery style sword of the gladius type. Accordingly, it has suspended from two crudely cast 2 1/2 by 1 1/2-inch rectangular brass frames. The belt forms a sewn junction in two places on each frame: therefore making 3 sections to the belt. A brown leather sword "frog" hangs on 2 straps about four inches below the belt. It is 6 inches deep and 5 inches at its widest point.

Condition: The belt has one small 1/2-inch tear seven inches along its bottom length. It is somewhat stiff but still pliable and it has about 75% of its original surface. Where the belt is sewn to the sword suspension frames, that were all originally factory sewn, one now finds evidence of modern cement to keep them in place. This was adequately done at best. The same repairs can be found on the straps supporting the sword frog. One has broken where it makes junction with the frog. The belt would benefit from minor tweaking by an experienced restorer, but it is acceptable as it now sits.

This set needs one look only and you see that is up there with the best. [pe][ph:L]
