Standard issue 1839 pattern enlistedman’s white buff leather belt with a small die stamped US buckle with a single arrow style hook. Belt retains its original white leather “belt loop” keeper sewn to one end. The belt is 1.5” wide and approximately 38” long. The leather shows light use, with the exterior surface showing remnants of white paint or chalk used to make the belt appear “clean” following field use. The belt remains soft and is very supple, with no weak points, tears, nor any maker stamps.
The buckle measures 40mm x 72mm. The die-struck, rolled brass face is in excellent condition and retains a pleasing, bright appearance. The specimen’s lead backing has the single brass arrowhead hook and clasp device, strong and tight. Lead itself is smooth, strong and free of corrosion.
Use of the small US oval plate was approved with the regulation of 1839. Although most of these small sized plates were manufactured in the 1840s and 1850s, many still saw use through the Civil War. [jet][ph:L]
