This is a set of well-used leather accoutrements as worn by a typical Civil War cavalryman.

The piece that holds the hole set together is the waist belt. Constructed of bridle leather with “Sam Brown” shoulder strap attached as well as long and short sword “drops.” Belt is 1.8” wide and approximately 38” long as it is set, but with an extra 3” available to expand. Drops are complete with brass hardware and swivel snap hooks on the end. The shorter strap has a break at the bottom fold. The buckle is the Pattern 1851 style featuring high relief details on front, German silver wreath, and narrow (0.5”) tongue on back. Raised shield is worn nearly smooth. Complete with fitted brass keeper. Leather remains soft and flexible showing surface crazing and wear.

On the belt is a percussion cap pouch. Outer flap exhibits same crazing and wear as belt and has the oval sub-inspector’s stamp. Closing tab is full and unbroken. Interior leather remains in much better condition with Newark, NJ maker’s stamp. Full fleece remains inside; no pick. Two narrow belt loops are good; brass finial on bottom.

Next on the belt is a black leather holster made to accommodate the Colt, Remington, and other revolvers. The leather still shows the “profile” of a revolver cylinder. The “pocket” measures 11” along its front edge. The flap and belt loop are each sewn to the back. The leather closing tab is sewn to the flap is broken. The associated brass finial remains tightly attached. Belt loop is approximately 3” wide and is attached by three rivets and a double line of stitching. The leather plug that originally closed the end of the holster is long gone. There are no maker’s stamps. Leather remains soft and pliable.

The accompanying pistol cartridge box has strong leather and tight seams. Outer flap shows only minor edge wear. Latch tab is complete and unbroken. The interior of the box is good and is strongly stamped “J. CUMMINGS / SPRINGFIELD / MASS.” The back has both belt loops stitched and riveted. Brass finial is present on bottom.

A good and displayable Civil War sword belt set that would look good on a uniform display.  [jet][ph:L]
