PATTERN 1839 CARTRIDGE BOX AND SLING WITH PLATES

$1,100.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 401-47

This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1839” infantry cartridge box with shoulder sling. Outer flap is stiff but clean and in good shape with some light surface crazing overall. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box with original leather thong. Closing tab is complete with a repaired break. Tab is sewn to the underside of the flap. The underside of this large flap is stenciled with number “164”.

The inner flap has “H. A. DINGEE / N-York” maker’s stamp. This flap covers the two cartridge tins that remain. This inner flap has some light crazing and still retains both side “ears”. The implement pouch is present and also in very good condition. The stitching is tight and unbroken. No vertical belt on this pattern. Two horizontal straps for the shoulder strap are sewn in place. One small chip of leather missing from under one of these straps.  Large “button” like brass finial on the bottom.  Iron buckles (with early, wide tongue) were sewn only; both remain tightly attached.

Box measures approximately 7” x 1.5” x 5.75” (for the .69 caliber cartridges). The two tin inserts held musket cartridges.  A 2” wide shoulder belt, ornamented with a brass eagle breast plate, is attached through loops and buckled to bottom of box.  The strap is unbroken. Moderate crazing to the strap. Breast plate is attached with a newer leather thong.

Both the brass cartridge box plate and eagle shoulder belt plate are in very good condition.  Both show nice detail and color.

This is a complete early-style infantry cartridge box with sling and both accoutrement plates.   [jet][ph:L]
