US MAKER MARKED & INSPECTED PATTERN 1864 CARTRIDGE BOX

$395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2021-1012

Cartridge box is the Pattern 1864 with embossed “US” at center of the outer flap. Leather surface has some light scuff marks but is in otherwise very nice condition. Lower left corner has maker’s mark of “E. A. CROSSMAN CO. NEWARK, N.J.” in an oval with an ordnance sub-inspector mark in the lower right corner. Both marks are good and very readable. Latch tab is solid.

Interior flap is in nice shape and is complete with both ears. Both tins are present inside the box. The implement pocket is good but its flap shows heavy surface crazing with some minor surface finish loss and flacking. Body of the box is in excellent condition. Bottom has both roller buckles and pear-shaped finial.

Reverse of the box has both the sling and belt loops in excellent condition.

Crossman was a prolific maker of accoutrements and had two large contracts in 1864 and 1865 for this pattern cartridge box.

A nice solid example.  [jet] [ph:L]
