In shape and configuration this box follows the Pattern of 1839.
The leather of the outer flap is in very nice condition. It is supple with only minor surface crazing throughout. There are several small spots of surface finish loss but nothing major. The latch tab is anchored to the box by a single straight line of stitching. The lower portion of the tab is missing.
The inner flap matches the outer in condition. It is good, strong and pliable. Both ears are firmly fastened in place.
The interior of the box houses a long single tin with four dividers across the top. The leather on the body of the box has shrunk some with age and has basically locked the tin in place making it impossible to see the tin’s lower level.
Overall, the leather on the body of the box seems to be drier than the flaps and shows heavier surface crazing and more surface finish loss but, that being said, all the seams appear tight. The implement pocket is present and complete but one of the vertical edges has split.
The bottom of the box has a round brass finial and only one of the two roller buckles. The reverse of the box has sling loops only and shows more surface finish loss than anywhere else on the box but the seams in that area are tight.
One end of the sling is attached to the roller buckle that is present. It is complete and solid but for the leather thong with the adjustment holes opposite the end attached to the box. The sling is approx. 2.25 inches wide and is made of russet leather that was dyed black. The leather surface has a tooled line along each edge and the face of the sling has moderate crazing with splotches of black dye still visible here and there.
Despite some minor condition issues this is a very nice example of a rare Confederate accoutrement that will display well. [ad] [ph:L]
