Cartridge box is the Pattern of July 1864, Type 2 for .58 elongated ball cartridges.
The leather on the box is excellent showing only minor surface finish loss around the edges and top. The exterior flap has a strongly embossed “US” at center and the lower left corner bears a very readable Ordnance Department inspector’s mark. Latch tab is solid and is held to the underside of the flap by a single straight line of stitching and a copper rivet.
The interior flap is solid and has both ears. Its condition is very good. Both tins are present on the inside. Implement pocket is complete and solid with light crazing and minor surface finish loss to the flap.
The bottom of the box has both roller buckles and the pear-shaped brass finial. Reverse has both beltloops and sling loops which are strong. Bottom of loops are sewn and riveted. At center bottom is a strong maker’s mark of “S. YOUNG & CO NEWARK N. J.”
When the box was dyed only a thin coat of black was put over the brown surface of the leather. Now the box has a decidedly brownish tint to the black finish. A close examination of the latch tab shows that only the tip was dyed black with the rest of the tab showing brown. The back of the box shows some areas where the dye spattered.
An interesting box that looks to have been finished in a hurry. [ad] [ph:L]
