Cartridge box is the Pattern of July 1864, Type 2 for .58 elongated ball cartridges.

The leather on the box is good showing only minor surface wear and dirt from age and storage. Box side panels have light crazing. The exterior flap has a weakly embossed “US” at center. Latch tab is solid and is held to the underside of the flap by a single straight line of stitching and a copper rivet.

The interior flap is solid and in nice condition with both ears. It is marked in three lines “WATERTOWN, ARSENAL, 1865” Both tins are present on the inside. Implement pocket is complete and solid and in nice condition.

The bottom of the box has both roller buckles and the pear-shaped brass finial. Reverse has both beltloops and sling loops which are strong. Bottom of loops are sewn and riveted.

The original sling matches the box well in condition and appearance. It has holes cut for the breast plate but no plate is present.  [ad] [ph:L]
