CIVIL WAR CAVALRY CARBINE CARTRIDGE BOX – POSSIBLY FOR SPENCER OR SMITH CARBINE

This carbine cartridge box is an original example of the classic leather accoutrement carried by mounted forces during the Civil War; and this one “was there.”

This specimen is constructed of black bridle leather. When closed, the large leather outer flap and smaller inner flap protect the ammunition in the carbine box. The drilled wood cartridge block is present and has larger than usual diameter holes. For use with cartridges much larger than .50 caliber, possibly for Smith or Spencer cartridges. Old wads of string are stuffed in the bottom of many of the holes.

The strong outer flap has a mild scalloped front edge with both corners “rolled” up indicating heavy use. Leather is soft with moderate crazing overall and heavier wear to lower corners. Stitched to the outer flap is a closure tab that is present but broken and repaired on one side at the hole.

Inner flap retains both “ears”. Inner flap closes over a small implement pouch sewn to the front of the box. The inner flap is unmarked. Bottom of box has a brass finial. The two black japanned roller buckles remain. On the box’s back side there remains two of the vertical belt loops with a single horizontal leather strap. The belt loops show the proper “pull” from carrying the weight of cartridges.

A nice example of an actual field-used Civil War carbine cartridge box. It shows heavy use, but “was there.”   [jet][ph:L]
