This an 1861/63 pattern U. S. infantry cartridge box for the.58 caliber rifle musket. The use of a single line of stitching to secure the latch tab for the outer flap is the 1861 pattern. The box is complete with both "roller" buckles, and all loops. The seams are tight. The implement pouch with its flap and tab are in place. The inner flap of the box has the side ears sewn in place. Both magazine tins are present inside. The surface shows crazing and some finish loss on the edges from wear or spots on the top of the outer flap from flexing. The latch tab on the front flap is only half there, however. The lead filled US plate is held firmly in place with a long iron nail.
The box follows the Allegheny Arsenal style in having the vertical waist belt loops centered under the horizontal shoulder belt loops. However, there are no maker or contractor marks. Typically, the rear belt loops were sewn at the top and rivetted at the bottom. On this example the rear belt loops are rivetted top and bottom; this would indicate that the box dates late 1863. A nice collectable variant. [pe][ph:L]
