This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box. Outer flap exhibits some crazing and outer finish loss. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box with a rawhide thong. Closing tab is broken, with just over an inch of material still stitched to the flap interior. The inner flap is marked “L.S. BAKER” and shows crazing and some cracking to the right edge section. This flap covers two cartridge tins, one with a broken and loose divider. This inner flap retains both “ears” - one being somewhat loosely attached with partially intact stitching. The implement pouch is present and in good condition with some drying and crazing. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken, save for a section of ripped leather at the low left rear seam.  Belt straps are sewn and riveted.  Brass finial on the bottom bears a mellow finish and surrounding leather shows some drying and cracking.  Iron buckles are sewn and both remain tightly attached.  Box measures approximately 7” x 1 ¾” x 5” (for the .58 cal. elongated ball).

Overall, an honest and well-used example of the quintessential US cartridge box.  [cm] [ph:L]
