An original Civil War period United States navy cartridge box. The outer flap embossed with an oval "USN". Some crazing to the leather with most evident being on the box sides. The bottom of the box has the original brass finial intact and in fine shape. Stitched tab present but, broken on one edge of the eye. A small seam separation on the upper left side rear, when opening the flap.
After the Civil War the cartridge box was converted to alternate uses. They removed the regular belt loops off of the back and replaced them with a large single loop. On the inside of the box, they removed the inner pouches that would have held the gun's implements. They also removed the tins from the innermost compartments and this one has a wooden block inserted. The block is bored with 18, approximate .50 caliber holes. This modification was done to allow the more modern (late 1800's) cartridges to be utilized. This is a good displaying box that has seen a few lives in its time. [stp][ph:L]
