This leather cap pouch, which is certainly Confederate made, is otherwise unusual. The front flap measures 4 inches across by 3 3/4 inches deep. At its center point there is a copper rivet this holds the strap that is just over 1/2 inch wide which extends down to a, now missing, leather toggle that closed the box. The flap covers a 2 inch by 3 1/2-inch 2-piece hand sewn leather pouch. This smaller than usual size suggests this is for carbine or pistol. On the rear center of the pouch is a loop for affixing the pouch to a belt. This narrow leather piece is about 1 inch wide and will accommodate a 2-inch-wide belt. It is held in place top and bottom by copper rivets. The condition of this dark brown leather cap box is excellent with minor scuffing to the box and flap but considerably more to the front closing strap and the rear belt loop. This may be the one survivor of a very few originally made. [pe][ph:L]
