This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box.

Outer flap exhibits some scuffing and light crazing. Oval “US” box plate is bright and secured to the flap of the box with a leather tie. Interestingly, indentations on the underside of the flap show that a belt plate was mounted on the flap at one time; leaving impressions of the arrow hooks. Original closing tab is gone and was replaced with a poor imitation. The inner flap is unmarked and remains in nice condition. This flap covers two cartridge tins that are complete and in place. This inner flap retains both “ears” that remain tightly attached. The implement pouch is present and complete but shows some finish crazing. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken.  Belt straps are sewn and riveted.  Brass finial on the bottom.  Iron buckles were sewn only; both remain tightly attached.

Box measures approximately 7.25” x 1.7” x 6”. This is a fine Civil War cartridge box and US plate; just need closing tab replaced.   [jet][ph:L]
