This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1857” infantry cartridge box for .69 caliber round ball cartridges.
Outer flap exhibits fine crazing; mostly on hinge area and outside edges. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box with pieces of leather thong. Brass has nice even patina. Closing tab is sewn to underside of outer flap and is unbroken but well worn. Leather is soft and pliable.
The inner flap is unmarked. This flap covers two cartridge tins that remain. This inner flap retains both “ears”; both feature a few broken stitches, but are still well attached. The “pocket” of the implement pouch is present and solid but the flap is missing leaving the stitch holes visible. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken. Belt straps are only sewn, no rivets. Round brass finial on the bottom. Iron roller buckles were sewn only; both remain tightly attached.
Box measures approximately 7.2” x 1.6” x 6” (for the .69 cal. round ball). The two tin inserts held musket cartridges.
This is the 1857 box made at Allegheny Arsenal per “Civil War Cartridge Boxes” by Paul Johnson. [jet][ph:L]
