Across from the bag is compartment formed by four folding flaps. Each are held closed by a short leather strap that attaches to a white metal buckle on its mate. The bottom of this compartment has a strong patent stamping of “PAT’D NOV. 12. 1861” in a slight arc over “JAN. 28,” at center with a lower arc formed by “& DEC. 12, 1862.” The flaps that form the compartment are is nice condition with only minor surface finish loss. Straps are attached by one copper rivet.
The bottom edge of the knapsack has the two previously mentioned white metal buckles for the two straps which hold the knapsack closed and sewn outside of each buckle are the anchor straps for the adjustable shoulder straps which are missing.
