In 1859, an updated version of the P1851 scabbard was adopted to accompany the new series of infantry accoutrements that had been approved in 1857. This new Pattern 1859 scabbard added two reinforcing rivets at the junction between the belt loop and the leather piece sewn around the throat of the scabbard.

This example is complete and unmarked, but form-fitted to the profile of a M1816 Musket bayonet.  It retains its dark, black finished leather.  Some crazing is noted in scattered areas as shown. Stitching is intact and finial is present but not secured. Loop diameter is 2.15” and overall length is 17.25”.

An honest, displayable example of a ubiquitous accoutrement – that held one of the classic earlier bayonets for Civil War use.   [cm][ph:L]
