This robustly constructed scabbard is fitted to the profile of an 1816 musket socket bayonet and features several obscure details that differentiate it from its federal counterparts.  Scabbard retains its brass tip, which remains secured by all pins.  The body is solidly stitched along a single seam and shows only light crazing with no creases.  The frog is heavily varnished to a cloudy, black finish with no crazing.  Outer perimeter stitching remains strong, while two brass studs are retained for attachment to a sling or belt.  A reinforcement tab on the reverse face of the frog shows light surface cracking but is strongly attached by stitching on either side. The remnant of a thin strip of leather is stitched between the layers of the frog, with a fractional tab protruding on either side. The body measures 16.6” from tip to throat, with a 2” wide frog at the upper portion and 3” where the throat attaches to the body.

A scarce pattern scabbard from the Civil War era and an interesting relic of the broad militia systems of the 1800’s.  [cm][ph:L]
