This is a U.S. Model 1873 scabbard for the triangular socket bayonet used with the .45-70 Springfield "Trapdoor" rifle, fitted with a leather frog carrying a brass "MASS" disc, marking it as an item used in Massachusetts state service. After the Civil War, state militia and National Guard units drew heavily on federal stocks of Trapdoor-era equipment, and Massachusetts identified its gear with these distinctive "MASS" frogs. They are a nice addition to any Indian Wars / post-Civil War or state militia accoutrement collection, and display well with a Trapdoor rifle and bayonet.

The tapered steel scabbard body retains much of its dark finish, with expected wear, handling marks and some scattered light surface roughness consistent with age and service. The leather throat and frog are complete and sound. The leather shows surface crazing and edge wear, with the stitching intact. The bright brass "MASS" disc is clear and legible on the front of the frog, and the brass attachment stud is present on the reverse. The reverse of the frog is stamped "40" twice, likely a rack or related unit number.

Overall length is approximately 19 inches including the frog.

A solid, honest example of a Massachusetts-marked Trapdoor-era bayonet scabbard.   [cm][ph:L]
