Offered here is a very fine pair of Civil War-era binoculars with their original case. These are an early style with the straight nose bridge. Made of brass and covered in black pain and black leather. Sun shields operate as they should, lenses are clean and clear, and these focus perfectly. Some very light wear to black paint on raised edges.
Black leather case remains in similar fine condition. Handle, leather hinge, and buckle-down closing strap are all fine. Shoulder strap appears to be half original and half replaced. Interior of case line in purple fabric. Inside of lid features a slightly worn maker’s logo in gold print.
Henry Negretti (1818–1879) and Joseph Zambra (1822–1897) formed a partnership in 1850, thereby founding the firm which would eventually be appointed opticians and scientific instrument makers to Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and King Edward VII, the Royal Observatory and the British Admiralty.
