Among regimental photos, few can match the presentation and subject features of this piece.  Photographed by Lieutenant G. H. Nickerson at Camp Rogers in New Bern, North Carolina; the image shows the 43rd Massachusetts Infantry in a square formation – something of a rarity in practical Civil War combat.

The photo is mounted to a heavy card with a lined border and green text and images. The text reads “CAMP ROGERS. / Encampment of the 43rd Regiment Mass. Vols. / NEWBERN, N. C. / MARCH 12, 1863.” The copyright text under the photo notes that it was entered in May of 1863. A regimental logo/crest features their commander’s name over their nickname (“Tiger Regiment”), with crossed flags and a snarling tiger at center.  A banner with stirring text at bottom reads “DEATH OR AN HONORABLE LIFE”.

The image is mounted in its original frame with two-piece wood backing, metallic gold-finished interior border, and deep painted grain across the main body. Dimensions are 15” x 17.25”.  A few areas of chipping are noted along the outside edges, along with newer brass brad-style nails which secure the backing.  It appears a layer of paper material was added to protect the image and card from the acid in the wood backing.

A truly striking photo with detailed identifiers make this a prime piece for the Civil War collector with interest in the 43rd, Massachusetts in the War, or the operations around New Bern.  [cm] [ph:L]
