This albumen photo measures 8.5” x 6.75” on a 10” x 9” mount, and under glass in a 12” x 10” frame. The photo displays a 4-4-0 steam engine (No. 223) with several box cars behind. A large brick building with 1881 date is in the background. A 1970s vinyl label on the mount identifies the location as Binghamton, New York.

In 1885, the Pennsylvania & New York Canal & Railroad Company (P&NY) operating near Binghamton, New York, represented a crucial link in the regional anthracite coal transport network. The P&NY was a strategically important corporate subsidiary controlled by the Lehigh Valley Railroad (LVRR). The P&NY mainline ran along the Susquehanna River from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, up to the New York state line at Waverly. By the late 1880s and early 1890s, the Lehigh Valley Railroad fully absorbed the P&NY infrastructure into its main network. This segment became a cornerstone of the LVRR's Northern Division, funneling Pennsylvania coal directly into New York and upstate markets. [jet] [ph:L]
