Image shows Sedley A. Lowd of Company K. He wears a dark civilian suit with white shirt and a dark bowtie. Bottom of the mount has a printed caption with his name and Company.

Image has very good clarity and contrast. Mount and paper are good with only light surface dirt. There is a very small puncture to the card on the subject’s forehead.

Reverse has a period ink inscription of “SEDLEY A. LOWD CO. K 2ND REGT N.H.V. DERRY DEPOT N.H. RECPD. OCT. 19TH 1889 (NO STAMPS.)”

Sedley A. Lowd was born April 21, 1841 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He enlisted as a private in Company K, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry on May 21, 1861 and deserted on April 18, 1863. He returned to the regiment on September 2, 1863 and was mustered out on June 21, 1864.

Lowed enlisted for a second time on October 14, 1864, this time as a private in the 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery. He deserted four days later on the 18th and was apprehended on December 24, 1864. He was finally discharged on September 5, 1865.

After the war Lowd lived in Derry Depot, New Hampshire and worked as a shoemaker. He died in Londonderry on February 6, 1917 and is buried there in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

The 2nd New Hampshire was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. After Gettysburg the 2nd garrisoned Point Lookout for a time before returning to the army to fight at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. [AD] [ph:M]
