Image is a post-war copy of a wartime photograph. View is of Rogers from the chest up. He wears a dark frockcoat with 2nd lieutenant’s shoulder straps. Bottom of the mount has a printed caption with his name and rank but it is slightly trimmed.
Image has good clarity and contrast. Mount has some minor edge wear.
Reverse has no photographer’s mark. In period red ink is “LIEUT SYLVESTER ROGERS KILLED 2ND BULL RUN AUG. 29, 1862” and then in period blue ink is “CO. G. AGE 24 RESIDENCE, NASHUA, N. H. APPOINTED 2ND LT. JUNE 4, 1861, MUSTERED IN CO. G JUNE 5TH, 1861, CO. G. 2ND REGT. N.H. APPOINTED 1ST LT. JAN. 1ST, 1862. KILLED AUG 29TH 1862, 2ND BULL RUN, VA.”
Sylvester Rogers was born in Petersham, Massachusetts. His place of burial is not known.
The 2nd was a hard fought regiment seeing action at 1st Bull Run, Williamsburg, Oak Grove, Gaines’ Mill, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where the 2nd bore the brunt of the assault on the Peach Orchard. After Gettysburg the 2nd garrisoned Point Lookout for a time before returning to the army to fight at Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. [AD] [ph:L]
