Image shows William H. Prescott of Company H in a slight left profile. He wears a dark civilian suit with white shirt and a light tie with printed scroll decoration. Bottom of the mount has a printed caption with his name and Company.

Image has very good clarity and contrast. Mount has some minor edge wear. Paper is good.

Reverse has no photographer’s mark. Period ink inscription at top reads “WM. H. PRESCOTT 2ND LIEUT CO H 2ND N H AND CAPT 16 US INFTY”

William H. Prescott was born in Concord, Massachusetts on July 12, 1833. He was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in Company H, 2nd New Hampshire Infantry on June 5, 1861 but was discharged for promotion to captain in the 16th US Infantry on August 7, 1861

Prescott served with the 16th US Infantry until his resignation on October 15, 1864. During his time with the regiment, it was engaged at Valverde, Shiloh, Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Dallas, Atlanta and Jonesboro.

After the war Prescott took up residence in Washington, D.C. where he married and had one daughter. He died there on April 25, 1901 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. [ad] [ph:L]
