This cabinet card photograph, taken and published by Filson and Lon of Steubenville, Ohio, features one of the state’s most famous sons, Rutherford B. Hayes. Not only the 19th President of the United States, he was also a decorated Civil War veteran, rising from the rank of Major in the 23rd Ohio Infantry to that of Major General. His post-war legacy also includes a prominent position as aide-de-camp to the Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, which he occupied when this photo was taken.
The image shows a bust view of Hayes, sporting a double-breasted suit, GAR membership lapel pin, and GAR membership ribbon badge. The image is mounted to an off-white card with gold accents. Written in Hayes’ hand under the photograph is the date “1891” and his rarer, full-form signature “Rutherford B. Hayes”. A crease is noted at low left that extends to the lower edge of the photo. The reverse is a brilliant red with gold text and border patterns and further details about the Steubenville photographer. An older note written in pencil on lined paper is pasted to the reverse and reads “Ex-Pres. R. B. Hayes.” (along with a small, older commercial description and inventory code – also in pencil). All edges and corners are generally sharp and free of major rolling or damage.
Quite a rare piece for the Civil War, Presidential, or Ohio collector. [cm][ph:L]
