Entitled “Foraging”, the puzzle was published by Jacob Shaffer of 628 N. Second St., Philadelphia, who is known as the pioneer of jigsaw puzzles in America. This 1864 puzzle is one of the earliest puzzles made in the United States.  This is a “trick” picture puzzle in which animals and hunters can be discovered hidden in the picture.

The original hidden picture puzzle is a woodblock print that is hand colored. It depicts a man fishing by a stream with his faithful dog lying nearby on a small island with a memorial monument guarding his master's gun. It is titled below the image "FORAGING" and in small print below the image reads: "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1864 by Jacob Shaffer in the Clerks office of the District court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania".

CDV is in overall good condition with minor soiling throughout; there is a vertical crease at center which is only noticeable on the reverse, and another crease at the lower left corner. Reverse is blank. Remains of modern sticker on reverse.  [ld] [PH:L]
