A lot of 22 albumen carte-de-visite views of Switzerland by Adolphe Braun (1812-1877), the celebrated Alsatian photographer based at Dornach, near Mulhouse. Braun's 1858-59 series photographing Alsace earned him the Legion of Honour and the title "Photographe de S.M. l'Empereur," and he went on to produce panoramic views of Switzerland, Savoy, and Italy through the late 1860s, alongside the art-reproduction work for which his firm later became best known.

The group covers classic Bernese Oberland and Alpine touring subjects popular with 19th-century travelers: alpine glaciers (Rhone, Grindelwald, Zermatt-area ice), the Reichenbach Falls, the Aare gorge, Chateau de Chillon on Lake Geneva, Chateau d'Oberhofen, views of Brienz, the Wetterhorn, the Aiguille du Dru, the Matterhorn (Mont Cervin), roped mountaineering parties on glacier ice, and Swiss chalet/village genre scenes. Several images include staffage figures - climbers, guides, and tourists - for scale and picturesque effect.

The lot shows two distinct Braun backmarks:

- An earlier mark bearing the imperial crest and the imprint "AD. BRAUN, PHOTOGRAPHE DE S.M. L'EMPEREUR, A DORNACH (Ht RHIN)" - tied to the imperial title Braun held under the Second French Empire, so this backmark should predate the Empire's fall in September 1870.

- A later, plainer mark reading "AD. BRAUN, PHOTOGRAPHE, A DORNACH (Ht RHIN)," without the imperial reference - consistent with the post-1870 republican period.

Most versos also carry a period ink caption in a contemporary hand giving Braun's negative number and the French title of the view (e.g., "3278 Glacier de Grindelwald," "513 Grotte au Glacier de Grindelwald," "5514 Le Wetterhorn de Grindelwald," "1249 Mont Cervin").

Mixed but generally sound condition for the type: period albumen prints on Braun's characteristic mounts, expected mild toning, foxing, and edge/corner wear consistent with age; a few mounts show small chips or soiling. Each card is currently housed in an individual protective sleeve.   [ss][PH:L]
