Chest-up view of Lewis in Confederate uniform. He wears a double-breasted frock with captain’s insignia visible on collar. Clear image with light contrast and some soiling. Plain mount with no photographer's backmark.

Lewis was a 25 year-old physician when he enlisted on 5/15/1861 at Ashland, Virginia as a Private in Company "B", 14th Virginia Cavalry. Detailed 7/24/1861 as Asst. Surgeon. Promoted to Surgeon. Wounded Petersburg, VA.

Born 5/18/1835 in Philadelphia, PA. He was a Graduate of University of Richmond and UMD Medical School. He was a Doctor at Halifax County and Superintendent of Miller Orphan Asylum, Lynchburg from 1872-1912. Lewis died 3/27/1913 in Lynchburg, VA and is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery.  [jet] [ph:L]
