William H. Kennedy Jr. was born September 15, 1843 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.
He entered the VMI Class of 1867 and served as a private in Company D of the Cadet Battalion at New Market on May 15, 1864.
After the war Kennedy worked as a hotel proprietor in Farmville, Virginia.
On December 27, 1877 Kennedy went to the law office of Colonel William Randolph Berkeley and knocked on his office door. When Berkeley opened the door, Kennedy shot him in the head and killed him. After this, Kennedy entered the office and stood behind Berkeley’s desk and mumbled something that witnesses did not understand. He then shot himself in the head. He died later that day.
His location of burial is not known. [ad] [ph:L]
