Image shows Colonel Edmund C. Charles seated in a high backed chair. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat and dark trousers. He is posed with his right hand on his hip and his left holding his forage cap on his knee.

The image is clear but the contrast is bright making the rank of the shoulder straps and the regimental number on the cap hard to read. All other details are fine.

Mount shows heavy edge wear and the image has light surface dirt.

Reverse has collector information in pencil and a back mark of CHARLES D. FREDRICKS & CO… NEW YORK

Edmund Cob Charles was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel of the 25^th New York on May 19, 1861 but resigned on October 4, 1861. He was next commissioned Colonel of the 42^nd New York on January 7, 1862.

While with the 42^nd the Colonel saw action with the 2^nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac on the Peninsula. At Glendale on June 30, 1862, Colonel Charles was severely wounded and captured. Taken to a Richmond hospital he was exchanged in mid-August and sent to a hospital in Philadelphia and then transferred to New York. He died in New York on April 26, 1863 and is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.  [ad] [ph:L]
