CDV is a bust view of Edelmiro Mayer in uniform as lieutenant colonel of the 45th US Colored Troops. Bottom center of the image has a nice period ink ID of “LT. COL. EDELMIRO MAYER 45 USCT.

Contrast and clarity are good. Mount and paper show light to moderate surface dirt from age and storage.

Reverse is blank but for some collector information in pencil.

Edelmiro Mayer was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on May 28, 1839. He served in the Argentine Army until the US Civil War began when he came to the United States and was appointed by President Lincoln as captain in Company C, 4th USCT on September 1, 1863 but was discharged a little over a month later for promotion to major of the 7th USCT.

While he was with the 7th they saw action at James Island, John’s Island, Deep Bottom and Petersburg. Mayer was discharged for promotion on November 2, 1864 and was made lieutenant colonel of the 45th USCT.

The 45th served at Petersburg and at the wars end Mayer was mustered out on November 4, 1865.

After the Civil War he traveled to Mexico and fought under Gen. Benito Juárez. He was made general and directed the City of Mexico. On his return to Argentina he was designated Governor of the province of Santa Cruz.

He died at Rio Gallegos, Argentina on January 4, 1897 and is buried in Buenos Aires’ Cementerio de la Recoleta.  [ad][ph:L]
